Satellite adapting to different roles in the African Market

Steve Rich of NewSat recently wrote a feature article for the magazine Africa Telecom where he discussed the changing role of satellite communications in the continent. Fibre broadband has become essential in delivering the necessary communications infrastructure in Africa, especially since many of its nations are still developing. However, Mr Rich explains that satellite communications continue to play a crucial role in the region. Many areas of Africa are considered rural and remote. In such locations, terrestrial networks simple aren’t enough.

This is where satellite communications come into play. Covering the “last mile” is integral for the success of any communications project. By filling in the gaps, satellite communications has made itself necessary for the development of African nations. The African market may well look to satcom for high-speed services, additional bandwidth capacity, and even specialized services.

Fibre and satellite do not necessarily have to compete with each other. In this special feature, we can life that both technologies can be used to complement one another.
